Forma passiva (Passive Voice)

S = soggetto (subject)
QW = parola interrogativa

Struttura Esempi
The book was written by my brother.

The car is washed every week.

1.2Forma attiva vs forma passiva

Forma attiva
Soggetto = agente

Esempio Commento

It's unknown who took it; the focus is on the absence of the wallet.

Per esempio: «My wallet has been taken» (non sappiamo chi l'ha preso), «English is spoken all over the world» (lo parla la gente in generale) e «The thief has been arrested» (ovviamente dalla polizia). Il passivo è frequente anche per descrivere un processo: «The coffee beans are harvested, roasted and then ground».

Confronta «The dog ate the cake» (attiva: il cane fa qualcosa) con «The cake was eaten by the dog» (passiva: qualcosa succede alla torta).

By o with nella forma passiva inglese: quale si usa?

Si dice «The cake was eaten by the dog», ma «The cake was cut with a knife», non «by a knife». The house was damaged by the storm». Il «da» del complemento d'agente italiano («arrestato dalla polizia») si rende con by, non con for o from: «He was arrested by the police», non «from the police».

È corretto dire «The letter was been sent» nella forma passiva?

No, «was been sent» è sbagliato: nel passivo al Past Simple was è seguito subito dal participio passato (past participle): «The letter was sent». La forma been compare solo nei tempi Perfect, dopo have, has o had: «The letter has been sent». La forma being si usa nei tempi Continuous: «The house is being cleaned now». Dopo i verbi modali (modal verbs) si usa be: «The task can be completed», non «The task can been completed».

È corretto dire «The book was wrote» nella forma passiva?

No: il passivo usa il participio passato (past participle), cioè la terza forma del verbo, non il Past Simple: «The book was written». Con i verbi regolari le due forme finiscono entrambe in -ed, come in «The car is washed every week», ma i verbi irregolari hanno spesso una terza forma diversa, quella della terza colonna nelle tabelle. Si dice «He was given two weeks», non «He was gave two weeks», e «My dog was stolen», non «My dog was stole».
