I was talking to her at 3 PM yesterday. Ieri alle 15:00 stavo parlando con lei.
She was reading a book from 4 till 6 PM.

L'azione o la situazione in corso è spesso introdotta da congiunzioni (conjunctions) come when e just as.
Esempio
---
Just as I was leaving the house the phone rang.
She was applying for the job when I met her.
We were having dinner when he called me. Stavamo cenando quando mi ha chiamato.

2.3Azioni parallele
Possiamo sottolineare che due o più azioni erano in corso nello stesso momento usando, per esempio, while o at the time (that).
Esempio
---
While she was painting the walls, he was assembling the furniture. Mentre lei dipingeva le pareti, lui montava i mobili.
The children were playing in the yard while their parents were making lunch.
The neighbors were having a party at the time that we were cleaning our house.

Parole come always, continuously e all the time sottolineano il carattere ripetitivo dell'azione.
Esempio
---
When he worked here, Roger was always making mistakes. Quando lavorava qui, Roger sbagliava in continuazione.
The dog was always barking in the middle of the night.
He was constantly interrupting me during meetings. Mi interrompeva di continuo durante le riunioni.
She was all the time borrowing my clothes without asking.

Esempio
---
The sun was setting behind the mountains, and the birds were chirping softly in the trees.
The rain was pouring down heavily, and the wind was howling through the empty streets.
She was sitting by the fireplace, lost in thought, when she suddenly heard a knock on the door.

Come si forma il Past Continuous: «I was work», «I working» o «I was working»?
Si dice «I was working»: il Past Continuous si forma con was o were più il verbo principale (main verb) con -ing. «I was work» e «I working» sono sbagliati. Mantieni la -ing dopo was o were in ogni tipo di frase: «She was reading», non «She was read», e «They were playing», non «They playing». Nella negativa si aggiunge not dopo was o were («We weren't talking»), e nella domanda was o were va prima del soggetto (subject): «What were you doing at 6 PM?»
Was o were nel Past Continuous: quale si usa con I, you, he e they?
Was va con I, he, she, it e nomi singolari, were con you, we, they e nomi plurali: «She was sleeping», «They were sleeping». Si dice «You were working», non «You was working», anche quando you indica una sola persona, e «The children were playing», non «The children was playing». Anche le domande al Past Continuous usano was o were, non did: «Was he studying all day?», non «Did he studying all day?»
Per esempio: «While she was painting the walls, he was assembling the furniture» e «The children were playing in the yard while their parents were making lunch». Puoi unirle anche con and: «I was cooking and my sister was doing her homework».
Cosa significa «was always» + -ing nel Past Continuous, come in «He was always making mistakes»?
«Was always» più -ing indica un'azione ripetuta molte volte nel passato, di solito fastidiosa: «He was always making mistakes». Funziona anche con were («The neighbours were always arguing»), e constantly ha lo stesso effetto: «He was constantly interrupting me during meetings». Metti always o constantly tra was o were e il verbo in -ing. Per un'abitudine neutra basta il Past Simple, anche dove in italiano useresti l'imperfetto: «andava sempre al lavoro a piedi» diventa «He always walked to work».
