Ejemplo
Just as I was leaving the house the phone rang.
She was applying for the job when I met her.

The children were playing in the yard while their parents were making lunch.

2.4Acciones repetidas

Ejemplo
When he worked here, Roger was always making mistakes.
Cuando trabajaba aquí, Roger cometía errores continuamente.
The dog was always barking in the middle of the night.

Ejemplo
The sun was setting behind the mountains, and the birds were chirping softly in the trees.
The rain was pouring down heavily, and the wind was howling through the empty streets.

3.Preguntas frecuentes

I was talking to her at 3 PM yesterday."

¿Cómo se forma el Past Continuous: "I was work", "I working" o "I was working"?

Di "I was working": el Past Continuous necesita was o were más el verbo principal (main verb) con -ing. "I was work" y "I working" son incorrectos. Mantén la -ing después de was o were en todo tipo de oraciones: "She was reading", no "She was read", y "They were playing", no "They playing". En la negativa se añade not después de was o were ("We weren't talking"), y en las preguntas was o were van delante del sujeto (subject): "What were you doing at 6 PM?"

¿Was o were en el Past Continuous? ¿Cuál va con I, you, he y they?

Usa was con I, he, she, it y los sustantivos (nouns) en singular, y were con you, we, they y los sustantivos en plural. Por ejemplo: "She was sleeping", "They were sleeping". Di "You were working", no "You was working", aunque you se refiera a una sola persona, y "The children were playing", no "The children was playing". Las preguntas en Past Continuous también usan was o were, no did: "Was he studying all day?", no "Did he studying all day?"

Por ejemplo: "While she was painting the walls, he was assembling the furniture" y "The children were playing in the yard while their parents were making lunch." También puedes unirlas con and: "I was cooking and my sister was doing her homework."

He was always making mistakes." También funciona con were ("The neighbours were always arguing") y con constantly: "He was constantly interrupting me during meetings." Pon always o constantly entre was o were y el verbo con -ing. Para un hábito neutro, que en español expresarías con el imperfecto ("siempre iba a pie al trabajo"), basta el Past Simple: "He always walked to work."
