3.Domande frequenti

Per esempio: «I met him yesterday» (momento preciso), «He worked in that bank for four years» (periodo concluso, ora non ci lavora più), «Every Christmas we baked cookies» (abitudine passata) e «I opened the door and saw him» (serie di eventi). In italiano si dice «l'ho visto ieri», ma in inglese «I saw him yesterday», non «I have seen him yesterday».

È corretto «didn't go»: dopo did o didn't il verbo principale (main verb) resta nella forma base (base form), perché did indica già il passato. Si dice «I didn't go to school yesterday», non «I didn't went to school yesterday», e «Did you see him?», non «Did you saw him?» La forma del passato (went, saw, worked) si usa nelle frasi affermative senza did: «I went to school yesterday.»

Was/were o did: cosa si usa nelle domande e nelle negazioni del Past Simple?

Con to be si usano was e were; tutti gli altri verbi formano domande e negazioni del Past Simple con did o didn't. Si dice «Were you at home?», non «Did you be at home?», e «He wasn't at work», non «He didn't be at work». Con gli altri verbi: «Did you like the film?», non «Were you like the film?»

Solo i verbi regolari (regular verbs) aggiungono -ed: «work» diventa «worked». I verbi irregolari hanno una propria forma del passato, da imparare: «take» diventa «took», «make» diventa «made», «write» diventa «wrote». Nelle domande e nelle negazioni, dopo did ogni verbo torna alla forma base (base form): «I didn't buy it.»
