1.Ripasso delle proposizioni
1.1Le basi
| Proposizione principale | Proposizione subordinata | Insieme |
|---|---|---|
| She will help me. Lei mi aiuterà. |
If I ask her about it Se glielo chiedo |
If I ask her about it, she will help me. Se glielo chiedo, lei mi aiuterà. |
| I would go for a walk. Andrei a fare una passeggiata. |
If it weren't that cold Se non facesse così freddo |

1.2When e If
Le parole When e If sono simili in molte lingue, ma in inglese sono diverse:
| Esempio | Significato |
|---|---|
| If you come to my place tonight, we'll have dinner together. Se vieni da me stasera, ceniamo insieme. |
= forse vieni |
| When you come to my place tonight, we'll have dinner together. Quando vieni da me stasera, ceniamo insieme. |
= vieni di sicuro. |

4.Domande frequenti
Quando si usa il third conditional (periodo ipotetico di terzo tipo)?
Il third conditional serve a immaginare un passato diverso da quello reale: if + Past Perfect, poi would have + participio passato (past participle). Per esempio: «If she had taken a taxi, she would have arrived on time» (non l'ha preso ed è arrivata in ritardo). In italiano è il periodo ipotetico dell'irrealtà riferito al passato: «se avesse preso un taxi». Si usa per rimpianti, occasioni perse e critiche a scelte passate: «If you had checked the tyres, you wouldn't have had an accident».
Second conditional o third conditional: che differenza c'è?
Il second conditional immagina il presente o il futuro; il third conditional immagina un passato che non è andato così. Confronta «If I had time, I would help you» (adesso, ma sono occupato) con «If I had had time, I would have helped you» (ieri, ma non avevo tempo). Il third conditional vuole il Past Perfect dopo if e would have + participio passato (past participle) nella proposizione principale (main clause): «If it had rained yesterday, we would have stayed at home».
Si può dire «If I would have known» nel third conditional?
No, si dice «If I had known»: nel third conditional would have va nella proposizione principale (main clause), mentre dopo if serve il Past Perfect. Di' «If I had known about the party, I would have come», non «If I would have known about the party, I would have come». Come nell'italiano corretto si dice «se l'avessi saputo» e non «se l'avrei saputo», dopo if non va would. Nel parlato americano informale si sente «if I would have», ma non è accettato nell'inglese scritto standard né agli esami.
Nel third conditional si può usare could have o might have?
Sì: nella proposizione principale (main clause) del third conditional, could have e might have possono sostituire would have. Could have indica una possibilità o una capacità nel passato: «If you had left earlier, you could have caught the train». Might have indica un risultato meno sicuro: «If we had checked the map, we might have found a shorter route». Usa would have quando immagini il risultato come sicuro: «If I had seen you, I would have said hello».
Nel third conditional 'd sta per had o per would in «If I'd known, I'd have told you»?
Nel third conditional 'd sta per had nella frase con if e per would nella proposizione principale (main clause). Quindi «If I'd known» è «If I had known», e «I'd have told you» è «I would have told you». Un trucco veloce: davanti a un participio passato (past participle) 'd è had; davanti a have è would. Nel parlato «would have» suona spesso come «would of», ma scrivi sempre «would have» o «would've».
