Past Perfect

Compare spesso con avverbi (adverbs) o locuzioni avverbiali (adverb phrases) come by the time e before, che chiariscono la sequenza.
| Esempio | Commento |
|---|---|
| By the time I got to the station, the train had left. |
First, the train left. Then, I got to the station. Prima è partito il treno. Poi sono arrivato in stazione. |
| Esempio | Commento |
|---|---|
| She got home and noticed that something had changed. |
First, some changes occurred. Then, she got home and noticed that. (two actions one following another - almost no time gap) Prima sono avvenuti alcuni cambiamenti.
| By the time Jack turned 16, he had finished growing. |
First, he finished growing (completed action). Only then, he turned 16. Prima ha finito di crescere (azione conclusa). Solo dopo ha compiuto 16 anni. |
| When Ksusha arrived at the party, Artem had already gone home. |
Ksusha arrived at the party. This is the starting point of the story. Then, we want to talk about things that happened before this time.
| When I called, they had just left. |
I wasn't able to talk to them. First, they left. Then, I called. Non sono riuscito a parlare con loro. Prima se ne sono andati. Poi ho chiamato. |
| Jay woke up this morning and saw that they had missed a call from their mother. |
Jay woke up and saw something that happened before. It was a call from their mother.
| Evento passato 1 | Evento passato 2 |
|---|---|
| The patient died. Il paziente è morto. |
The doctor arrived. Il medico è arrivato. |
| Esempio | Commento |
|---|---|
| The patient died when the doctor arrived (Past Simple). |
The patient died at the time or just after the doctor arrived. |
| The patient had died when the doctor arrived. |
The patient was already dead when the doctor arrived. |
| The doctor arrived quickly, but the patient had already died. |
The patient was already dead when the doctor arrived. |
| When I arrived, Anne left. Quando sono arrivato, Anne è andata via. |
She left at that moment. In this sentence, I saw Anne, however briefly. È andata via in quel momento. |
| When I arrived, Anne had left. |
She left before I got there. In this sentence, I didn't see her at all.
| Esempio |
|---|
| After I finished, I went home. Dopo aver finito, sono tornato a casa. |
| I got out of the taxi, paid the fare, tipped the driver and dashed into the station. |
| 'I came, I saw, I conquered,' Julius Caesar declared. «Venni, vidi, vinsi», dichiarò Giulio Cesare. |

| Esempio |
|---|
| I HAD hoped we would leave tomorrow, but it won't be possible. |
| He HAD intended to make a cake, but he ran out of time. |
| I HAD hoped to send him a telegram to congratulate him on his marriage, but I didn't manage it.

Per esempio: «By the time I got to the station, the train had left». Si forma con had + participio passato (past participle) e indica quale di due eventi passati è avvenuto prima, spesso con by the time, before, already o just. She got home and noticed that someone had moved her chair».
Si può dire «When I arrived, she has already left» invece del Past Perfect?
No, si dice «When I arrived, she had already left»: quando guardi indietro da un momento passato serve had, non has o have. Il Past Perfect usa had con tutti i soggetti (subjects), anche nelle frasi negative e interrogative: «They hadn't arrived by the time we came in» e «Had you met him before the party?»
Past Perfect o Past Simple dopo «It was the first time»?
Dopo «It was the first time», in un racconto al passato, il tempo normale è il Past Perfect. Per esempio: «It was the first time I had flown alone». Lo stesso schema vale con second, third e only: «It was only the second concert she had ever been to». Se la prima volta è adesso, usa invece il Present Perfect: «It's the first time I've been here».
Per esempio: «I had hoped to finish the report today, but the meeting ran late». Funziona allo stesso modo con expect, intend, mean, suppose, think e want: «We had meant to call you, but we forgot» e «She had expected the exam to be easy».
