2.Perguntas frequentes

Diga "The phone rang" e "She sang at the concert", mas "The phone has rung twice" e "She has sung in that choir for years".

Diga "A bee stung me" e "He swung the bat".

Diga "She laid the book on the table" e "I lay on the sofa all afternoon", em que lay é o passado de lie. "The letter had lain unopened for weeks" usa o particípio passado (past participle) de lie. Lie no sentido de mentir é regular: "He lied to me."

As duas estão certas: "dived" é o passado padrão no inglês britânico, e "dove" é comum no inglês americano e canadense. Você pode dizer "She dived into the pool" ou, no inglês americano, "She dove into the pool". Para o particípio passado (past participle), "dived" é a opção segura em qualquer lugar: "He has dived off that cliff before."

Você pode dizer "The theory has proved correct" ou "The theory has proven correct"; proven é especialmente comum no inglês americano. Não use proven como Past Simple: "He proved his point", e não "He proven his point".
