2.Domande frequenti
Di' «The phone rang» e «She sang at the concert», ma «The phone has rung twice» e «She has sung in that choir for years». Spring e shrink seguono lo stesso schema: «spring - sprang - sprung», «shrink - shrank - shrunk». Quindi, in un inglese curato, «The door sprang open», non «The door sprung open».
Di' «A bee stung me» e «He swung the bat». Stick, wring e dig funzionano allo stesso modo: «stick - stuck - stuck», «wring - wrung - wrung», «dig - dug - dug».
Di' «She laid the book on the table» e «I lay on the sofa all afternoon», dove lay è il passato di lie. «The letter had lain unopened for weeks» usa il participio passato (past participle) di lie. Non scrivere «layed». Lie nel senso di «mentire» è regolare: «He lied to me».
Puoi dire «She dived into the pool» oppure, in inglese americano, «She dove into the pool». Per il participio passato (past participle) «dived» è la scelta sicura ovunque: «He has dived off that cliff before».
Puoi dire «The theory has proved correct» oppure «The theory has proven correct»; proven è particolarmente comune nell'inglese americano. Non usare proven come Past Simple: «He proved his point», non «He proven his point».
