2.Domande frequenti

Di' «He swam across the river yesterday» e «He has swum across the river», non «He swum across the river» né «He has swam across the river».

Di' «I cut my finger yesterday», non «I cutted my finger yesterday», e «She hurt her leg», non «She hurted her leg».

Confronta «I usually read in the evening» (si pronuncia /riːd/) con «I read that book last week» e «I have read it twice» (entrambi /red/). Con he o she il presente è «reads», quindi «She read the book» è al passato.

Di' «He hung his coat on the hook» e «We have hung the pictures on the wall», non «He hanged his coat on the hook».

L'inglese britannico usa «burnt» e «dreamt» accanto a «burned» e «dreamed», mentre l'inglese americano usa soprattutto «burned» e «dreamed». La stessa forma vale per il past simple e per il participio passato (past participle): «I burned the toast» o «I burnt the toast», «She has dreamed of this day» o «She has dreamt of this day». Nell'inglese americano «burnt» resta comune come aggettivo: «burnt toast».
