Past Perfect

hadn't = had not
QW = palabra interrogativa

2.Uso

Suele aparecer con adverbios (adverbs) o locuciones adverbiales (adverb phrases) como by the time y before, que aclaran la secuencia.

Ejemplo Comentario
By the time I got to the station, the train had left.
First, the train left. Then, I got to the station.

Ejemplo Comentario
She got home and noticed that something had changed.
Llegó a casa y notó que algo había cambiado.
First, some changes occurred. Then, she got home and noticed that. (two actions one following another - almost no time gap)
By the time Jack turned 16, he had finished growing.
First, he finished growing (completed action). Only then, he turned 16.
Primero terminó de crecer (acción completada). Solo después cumplió 16 años.
When Ksusha arrived at the party, Artem had already gone home.
Ksusha arrived at the party. This is the starting point of the story. Then, we want to talk about things that happened before this time. (Artem had already gone home)
When I called, they had just left.
Cuando llamé, acababan de irse.
I wasn't able to talk to them. First, they left. Then, I called.
No pude hablar con ellos. Primero se fueron. Después llamé.
Jay woke up this morning and saw that they had missed a call from their mother.
(Esp.)
Jay woke up and saw something that happened before. It was a call from their mother.

Hecho pasado 1 Hecho pasado 2
The patient died.
El paciente murió.
The doctor arrived.

Ejemplo Comentario
The patient died when the doctor arrived (Past Simple).
The patient died at the time or just after the doctor arrived.
The patient had died when the doctor arrived.
The patient was already dead when the doctor arrived.
The doctor arrived quickly, but the patient had already died.
The patient was already dead when the doctor arrived.
When I arrived, Anne left.
Cuando llegué, Anne se fue.
She left at that moment. In this sentence, I saw Anne, however briefly.
When I arrived, Anne had left.
Cuando llegué, Anne ya se había ido.
She left before I got there. In this sentence, I didn't see her at all.

Ejemplo
After I finished, I went home.
Después de terminar, me fui a casa.
I got out of the taxi, paid the fare, tipped the driver and dashed into the station.
'I came, I saw, I conquered,' Julius Caesar declared.
"Llegué, vi, vencí", declaró Julio César.

2.2Esperanzas y deseos no cumplidos

Ejemplo
I HAD hoped we would leave tomorrow, but it won't be possible.
He HAD intended to make a cake, but he ran out of time.

Por ejemplo: "By the time I got to the station, the train had left." Sirve para mostrar cuál de dos hechos pasados ocurrió primero, a menudo con by the time, before, already o just. She got home and noticed that someone had moved her chair."

After I finished work, I went home."

¿Es correcto decir "When I arrived, she has already left" en lugar del Past Perfect?

El Past Perfect lleva had con todos los sujetos, también en negativas y preguntas: "They hadn't arrived by the time we came in" y "Had you met him before the party?"

¿Past Perfect o Past Simple después de "It was the first time"?

Después de "It was the first time" en un relato, lo habitual es el Past Perfect: "It was the first time I had flown alone." Lo mismo vale con second, third y only: "It was only the second concert she had ever been to." Si la primera vez es ahora, usa el Present Perfect: "It's the first time I've been here."

¿Qué significa "I had hoped" en Past Perfect?

Por ejemplo: "I had hoped to finish the report today, but the meeting ran late." Funciona igual con expect, intend, mean, suppose, think y want: "We had meant to call you, but we forgot" y "She had expected the exam to be easy."
